The One Budgeting Method That Actually Works
I used to think budgeting meant spreadsheets, categories, and tracking every penny.
I’d start January 1st with the most detailed budget you’ve ever seen…color-coded by category, formulas calculating percentages, subcategories for everything from “coffee” to “dog treats.” By January 15th, I’d given up completely.
Sound familiar?
Here’s what I learned: the best budget is the one you’ll actually use. And the one most people will actually use is surprisingly simple. It’s called the 50/30/20 method, and it’s been a game-changer for thousands of families who felt like budgeting failures.
“She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.” ~Proverbs 31:16
The virtuous woman didn’t need a 47-category spreadsheet. She made wise decisions with intention and confidence. That’s what this method gives you…clarity without complexity.
Today’s Practical Step:
Try the 50/30/20 method this week.
Here’s how it works:
50% - Needs (Housing, utilities, groceries, minimum debt payments, insurance) The essentials you can’t eliminate. If this is over 50%, you know exactly where to focus your attention.
30% - Wants (Dining out, entertainment, hobbies, subscriptions) The stuff that makes life enjoyable but isn’t essential. This gives you permission to spend on joy without guilt.
20% - Future (Emergency fund, extra debt payments, retirement, savings goals) This is where you build security and freedom. Pay this category first, like a bill to your future self.
How to start:
1. Calculate your after-tax income for the month
2. Multiply by 0.50, 0.30, and 0.20 to get your three amounts
3. For one week, just observe where your money actually goes
4. Don’t stress about perfection—aim for close enough
The beauty? You only have three decisions to make: Is this a need, a want, or for my future? That’s it.
No subcategories for “coffee versus lunch out.” No guilt over which entertainment budget got overspent. Just three simple buckets that give you both freedom and boundaries.
A Simple Prayer for Today:
God, thank You for making wisdom accessible to me. Help me see that managing money doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. Give me the discipline to prioritize my future while still enjoying the present You’ve given me. Guide my decisions to reflect both wisdom and generosity. Amen.
