The Giving Paradox: Why Generosity Creates Abundance
"We can't afford to give right now."
I used to say those words while looking at our tight budget, convinced that generosity was a luxury for people who had already figured out their finances.
Then I met a couple who tithed faithfully on a teacher's salary while raising three kids. They weren't wealthy by any measure, but they had something I didn't: peace about money and a confidence that there would always be enough.
"We can't afford not to give," the wife told me. "It's not about the math..it's about trust."
That conversation changed everything for me. Because here's what I've learned: generosity isn't the reward for having enough money. It's often the path to discovering you have enough.
"Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap." ~Luke 6:38
This isn't a formula for getting rich quick. It's a promise about the heart transformation that happens when we loosen our grip on what we have and trust God with what we need.
Today’s Practical Step:
Start small, start somewhere.
Begin with what feels possible.
$5 a month to a cause you care about
Buying coffee for the person behind you once a week
Putting loose change in a giving jar
Give first, budget second. When you get paid, set aside your giving amount before you pay bills or buy groceries. This trains your heart to see generosity as a priority, not an afterthought.
Give locally and personally.
Pay for someone's groceries when their card gets declined
Leave a generous tip for a server having a hard day
Buy school supplies for a teacher's classroom
Remember the real goal. You're not giving to get something back. You're giving to break free from the fear that there's never enough. Each act of generosity is practice in trusting God's provision.
The paradox is real: the more tightly we hold our money, the more anxious we become about it. But when we open our hands in generosity, even small amounts, we discover that God really can be trusted with our needs.
Start where you are. Give what you can. Watch what happens to your heart. 🙏🏽❤️
A Simple Prayer for Today:
God, help me trust You more than I trust my bank account. Show me opportunities to be generous, even in small ways. Break the fear in my heart that says there's never enough. Let my giving be an act of worship and trust in Your provision. Teach me the joy that comes from open hands and an open heart. Amen.
