The insurance salesman sat across from our kitchen table with a stack of brochures, explaining why we needed coverage for everything from cancer to job loss to our cell phones getting wet.
By the end of his presentation, I was convinced we were one accident away from financial ruin and needed to insure everything we owned.
The monthly premium? More than our grocery budget.
That's when I learned an important lesson: insurance isn't about eliminating every possible risk. It's about protecting against the risks that would devastate you financially while not paying for coverage you don't actually need.
The goal isn't to be insurance-rich and cash-poor. It's to have smart protection that gives you peace without breaking your budget.
"The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty." ~Proverbs 21:5
Being diligent with insurance means thinking strategically, not emotionally. It means protecting what matters most while not falling for every "what if" scenario.
Today’s Practical Step:
Focus on the essentials first.
The "Must-Haves" (if they apply to you):
Health insurance - Medical bills can bankrupt you faster than anything else
Auto insurance - Required by law, protects against major liability
Homeowner's/Renter's insurance - Protects your largest asset or belongings
Life insurance - If anyone depends on your income (term life, not whole life)
Disability insurance - Protects your ability to earn income
The "Think Twice" Category:
Extended warranties on appliances - Usually overpriced for what they cover
Credit life insurance - Expensive and often unnecessary
Insurance on small items - Cell phones, small electronics
Accidental death insurance - Very specific coverage that rarely pays out
Smart Shopping Tips:
Bundle when it saves money - Often auto and home together costs less
Raise your deductibles - Higher deductible = lower monthly premium
Shop around annually - Rates change, especially for auto insurance
Don't buy insurance from retailers - That warranty at the electronics store is usually overpriced
The key question to ask: "If this happened, would it create a financial emergency I couldn't handle?" If yes, insure it. If no, self-insure by putting that premium money in your emergency fund instead.
A Simple Prayer for Today:
God, give me wisdom to make smart decisions about protecting what You've entrusted to me. Help me find the balance between being prepared and being anxious. Show me how to be a good steward without being controlled by fear. Let my insurance choices reflect trust in Your provision, not fear of the future. Amen.
