From Burden to Freedom: Your Debt Doesn't Define You

The weight of debt can feel crushing, can't it?

Every month, you send money to credit card companies, student loan servicers, and car payments…money that could have gone toward your dreams, your family, or building that peace fund we talked about last week.

I used to lie awake calculating minimum payments in my head, wondering if I'd ever see the other side. The shame was almost worse than the numbers. How did I get here? Why can't I get ahead?

But here's what I've learned: debt isn't a moral failing. It's often the result of life happening…medical bills, job loss, or simply not having the tools to manage money well. And more importantly, it's not permanent.

"The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender." ~Proverbs 22:7

This verse isn't meant to shame us, it's meant to show us the freedom waiting on the other side. God wants us free from financial bondage so we can be generous, peaceful, and fully present for His purposes in our lives.

Today’s Practical Step: Choose your debt freedom strategy.

1. List everything you owe. Write down each debt: balance, minimum payment, and interest rate. Seeing it all on paper removes the fear of the unknown.

2. Pick your attack method.

  • Debt Snowball: Pay minimums on everything, throw extra money at the smallest balance first. (Great for motivation!)

  • Debt Avalanche: Pay minimums on everything, attack the highest interest rate first. (Saves more money mathematically)

3. Find your first $25.

  • Skip one meal out this week

  • Sell something you don't use

  • Pick up a small side task and put that $25 toward your chosen debt this month.

4. Celebrate small wins. Each payment is progress. Each dollar sent is a step toward freedom.

Remember: You're not just paying off debt…you're buying back your peace, your options, and your ability to be generous with what God has given you.

A Simple Prayer for Today:

God, I surrender my financial burdens to You. Give me wisdom to make good choices and discipline to follow through. Help me see debt freedom not as impossible, but as the next chapter You're writing in my story. Thank You for the hope that tomorrow can look different than today. Amen.

Next newsletter: We'll talk about the one budgeting method that actually works (hint: it's simpler than you think).
